Ooooh, is this the sequel?
Yes, it’s here. Ondine: The Autumn Palace is book 2 in the Ondine series.
How long did it take to write?
About nine months, which is seriously fast for me. I got the first draft down in about six months, left it for a month and came back to do revisions. Then my editors at Egmont loved it, and sent me several pages of revisions - these took a few months as well.
Why does it take so long?
Great question! It takes so long because I’m human and I wish I could be faster. All my editors are also human too. (Fact. I’ve visited them and given them squishy hugs. Not a cyborg among them). They also need time to read the manuscript, have a good think about it, make suggestions, send me revisions etc.
Who is your favourite character from Autumn?
My favourite character is still Hamish/Shambles, because he’s such a lovable rogue. It’s hard to say who my favourite new character is in book 2. I love the Infanta, she was such fun to write, and I also dearly love Draguta because she’s making the best of a very ordinary life. I adore Hetty. She very nearly didn’t make it into the book, so we had a bit of a mental chat and she lifted her game. Those who have read the book know that having a pony made her very happy.
Why are there so many girl characters in your books?
Because we are multi-faceted creatures with plenty to say!
Do you have a pet ferret yet?
No, but I’ve seen some very clever, lockable pet shelter kits at the local hardware store and... oh who am I kidding, I would love a ferret but I also know I don’t have time to devote enough care to one.
Will there be a third book?
I’m writing the trequel, Ondine: The Winter of Magic right now. (This title may change however.) I’d better get back to it.
